AWD vs 4WD for Beach Driving
Real-world beach driving lessons from learning in both an AWD Toyota Kluger and a proper 4WD.

Introduction A lot of people assume you need a heavily modified 4WD before even thinking about beach driving. That is not always true. I started learning beach driving in a 2007 Toyota Kluger AWD before eventually moving into a 2022 Isuzu MU-X 4WD. That progression taught me something important. An AWD can actually teach you a lot about driving properly on sand. But it also makes you very aware of the limits once conditions become soft or difficult. What surprised me about the AWD Before taking the Kluger onto the beach for the first time, I honestly expected to struggle badly. I lowered the tyre pressures beforehand because I assumed the vehicle would get bogged almost immediately. Surprisingly, the Kluger handled firmer flatter sand much better than expected. The biggest surprise was how capable the vehicle felt once tyre pressures were lowered properly. The softer tyre pressures made the vehicle: smoother easier to control less harsh on rough sand more capable in softer sections Real-world takeaway: Many beginners underestimate how much tyre pressures improve capability on sand. Lower pressures often make a bigger difference than extra power. Where the AWD limitations started appearing The Kluger started feeling out of its depth once the sand became very soft. Particularly: further away from the waterline heavily churned-up sand soft beach exits deeper wheel tracks That was where momentum became much more important. The AWD system also felt more electronics-controlled compared to a proper 4WD later on. If traction control was left active, the system would often cut power right when momentum was needed most. You really needed to disable traction control before entering the beach. Otherwise the electronics would stop delivering power to the wheels that actually needed it.
