Suzuki V-Strom 650 Adventure Build: Every Modification and Why I Made It

I’m progressively building my Suzuki V-Strom 650XT for Australian touring, gravel roads and weekend escapes. Here’s every modification I’ve made, why I made it, what worked and what’s coming next.

I bought my 2020 Suzuki V-Strom 650XT largely stock and with fewer than 9,000 km on it. That was deliberate. Rather than paying extra for someone else's choice of accessories, I wanted to start with a relatively unmodified bike and progressively build it around the riding I actually wanted to do: long days on sealed roads, weekend touring, gravel roads, state forests and the occasional interesting detour when the bitumen ends. The objective isn't to turn the V-Strom into a hardcore off-road bike. I want to retain the reliability, road manners and touring ability that made me choose the V-Strom 650 in the first place, while improving its protection, practicality, comfort and ability to explore beyond sealed roads. This page documents that build as it happens. I'll keep updating it as new equipment is fitted, tested and either proves worthwhile or doesn't. What I’m Building This V-Strom For My Suzuki V-Strom 650XT build is focused on making an already capable road and touring motorcycle better suited to Australian weekend adventure riding. So far I've concentrated on navigation, electrical power, protection, maintenance practicality and improving the bike for longer rides. The next stage will focus more heavily on gravel capability, lighting, luggage, braking, hand protection, suspension and touring comfort. I'm not trying to modify everything. If something already works, I'm happy to leave it alone. Every modification needs to solve a genuine problem or improve how I actually use the motorcycle.
